Excellent article. And now here’s a new scam that I’ve just been victim to. I’ve stayed in a zillion hotels around the world, and this is the first. This scam was at Hotel Equatorial in Shanghai, a 4 or 5 star hotel. The hotel quoted its rates in the local currency, RMB. Upon checkout, the final bill was generated in RMB. The credit card slip that I signed was also in RMB. Everything OK so far. Later, when the credit card bill came, I saw that I had been billed directly in my base currency (Euros) at a LOWER rate than the bank rate for that day. (The bank issuing the credit card of course charged me its own commission op top for making a foreign transaction… which is fine and as per the T&C of that bank.)

Moral: Avoid getting scammed by hotels, and avoid Hotel Equatorial.
